Jake's History of Young Giants

It's an interesting question whether backgammon, as played by a human being, depends intrinsically on judgment more than on calculation. It seems to me that someone with a prodigious memory for reference positions and an ability to rapidly calculate ahead a couple of ply could do extremely well at backgammon. If that is true then perhaps the main reason we don't see more such "calculating machines" among the Giants is that we have only relatively recently acquired the ability to generate reference positions ad infinitum using bots, and there has been relatively little effort (except for the openings and a few collections of cube reference positions) to compile such reference position libraries in a systematic manner. If enough people cared enough about the game, then I suspect that the top backgammon coaches would soon compile such libraries and drill their young stars on them. If a kid got regularly chewed out by his or her coach for a whopper that was caused by failing to make a simple adjustment to reference position 14.25f then I think we would see more young superstars.
