Good puzzle. For the 5 roll solutions I got hung up thinking that white would have to hit on his 2nd roll.

Not sure I follow. I've listed your two five-roll solutions below, underlining White's hits. In your second solution, White does indeed hit on his second roll (i.e., "the" fourth roll). However, in your first solution, White hits on his first roll (i.e., "the" second roll), as he does in mine (61B-62S-41H-51R-51L).

It occurred to me that you might have been practicing with colors reversed -- White going first, but the first player can only hit on his second roll (i.e., "the" third roll) in any five-roll solution.
