I don't think you can answer this question without know the full score and just how bad a gammon is compared to getting gammoned at that score. Also, how often is getting a hit actually going to win you the gammon if you hit it, and how often will you win the game if you end up hitting both checkers...that depends on how good your board is and where your checkers are. And then you have to take into account how valuable a win is compared to getting gammoned or backgammoned.

ON TOP OF THAT, I am also sure that some weight must be given to the comparative skills of the players and how close you are to the dinner break.

One thing most people forget when they are about to get backgammoned for the match, that I never forget: see if you can get a hedge.
