I don't think it's right to trap yet. Trapping carries some risk of losing a gammon and it's not even clear to me that it wins more games than the simpler plan of 8/2(2) trying to pick up a third checker and trapping later if need be.

The correct play might be different if White had a different number of checkers off. The risk of losing a gammon would change, as would the tradeoff between a closeout versus an ace-point game. It would be interesting to roll this out for various numbers of checkers off.
