I learnt backgammon at university on a travel set with the board printed onto a tea towel. Eventually I upgraded to board I found printed on the back of a chess board and used coins as checkers. I did not care that the boards were not great - I thought they had character. Indeed the ability to wash the backgammon tea towel came in use several times.

I do not think it makes much difference what you study on initially - if a student likes the game, any set will be loved.
