Part of MCG's point is that it is not entirely clear what "really is a pass" means here. Even if the uberbot-vs-uberbot verdict is "pass" doesn't mean that Eli made a mistake by taking. Less tangible factors such as each player's psychological state at the time come into play. If you find yourself hoping for a pass then that means that some part of your mind believes that your opponent's correct strategy is to take. What is very difficult to tell, especially in the heat of battle, is whether that part of your mind is evaluating all the intangible factors more accurately than your conscious mind is, or whether it is succumbing to irrational fear. Managing oneself properly in such situations is an important skill in all competitive sports and games, and it is a skill cannot be mastered through purely technical training.
