By hitting 18/16* instead of 6/4* you create 3 blots instead of two. You also relinquish what should be considered a defensive anchor at this point in the game. It's true, 18/16* would gain the most pips in the race if it didn't have all these other downfalls, such as being pounded in return more often.

It's easy to see that 6/4* leaves the 14 direct shots and then the entering twos or fives to hit loose. Loose hits aren't a big deal here as you're of course favored to enter and probably to hit back either directly or indirectly depending on the sequence.

Hitting 18/16* leaves return 4s and 6s to hit in the outfield and two still to hit loose. It also gives entering 4s as an anchoring number. It's too stringy and too hard to clean up even when things go moderately the right way. Asking myself the common 3 questions, which play wins more games, which play wins more gammons, which play loses more gammons, the clear nod goes to 6/4* on at least 2/3 and the swing on the third is nowhere near enough to swing the other two. 6/4* is the stand out play for me.
