Chicago ABT Finals

There are variations on this theme that can occur under a "normal" format as well. For example, there are often a number of players who don't bother to show up for the Last Chance on Sunday, and Murphy's Law says that one or more of them will always be in your Calcutta group. If you knew in advance which players are more prone to forfeit their spot in the Last Chance, it might impact your buying decision. By the same token, if you ran into a player you owned on Saturday night and he said he was inclined to forfeit his Last Chance spot, maybe it would be worthwhile to offer him some small financial inducement to play instead.

This strikes me as a little sketchy, but then again, I think in an ethical competition players should be expected to use best efforts to win all of their matches. So maybe there's poor sportsmanship on the part of the forfeiting player who puts you in that position in the first place.
