Well sure, I pretty much agree. On the sportsmanship question, I think it is a debatable issue whether players have any obligation to uphold the spirit of competition, or whether we're all free to forfeit whenever we feel like it because hey, it's our money. Analogous situations come up in pro sports with teams resting for the playoffs in meaningless late-season games, in chess with regard to grandmaster draws, etc. Perhaps these examples illustrate how difficult it is to actually do anything about these problems (should the NBA really bar the Lakers from resting Kobe Bryant for a game?) but that is independent of the question of whether there is an ethical obligation.

Perhaps a more relevant example, although we're getting far afield here, is whether a director should have the right to disallow hedging, in the interests of promoting robust competition.
