My view on this whole calcutta and covering entry fees is that the tournament itself is a distinct and unique entity, and players can do as they please - be it forfeiting, or not playing well, just because they dont feel like it (for whatever reason).

Any bets that are made regarding matches, or total equity exist outside of the tournament itself, and are between the player and his opposing parties.

It should be a point of moral responsibility that if you as a player enter into an agreement with someone else betting on your play and equities in a tournament, that you should morally be bound to play your best, and to try your best. Put simply, if I am that other party that has a financial interest in your play, and you dont play to your fullest ability because you made a conscious decision not to, then yes, I will be pissed, and I will likely not have anything further to do with you in this at least. You are also likely to have lost many respect points in my mind, and my opinion will be henceforth tarnished.

Now, if you choose (like in Neils example below) to offer up some amount of equitable settlement because of your conscious decision to not play / forfeit, then that would probably satisfy me to a degree. I think that was a nice and fair gesture.

Finally (nearing the end of my rant), for Rory to get all vocal about his (clearly wrong) opinion about a players value, was plain wrong. If I had been offering to pay for this players, I would not have cared for his opinion, and suggested that the player consider the options, I'm in for 50% equity, or not at all.
