I will give you one of the major problems with the current rule. If your opponent rolls a 6-4 and plays it as a 5-4, you have the choice of allowing the illegal move or requiring him to correct it to the legal move. But you only can exercise that choice AFTER he has picked up his dice.

Not true at all. If I am going to disallow his illegal play I can stop him before he picks up his dice. This happens all the time and is what the 'legal play' players do.

If I am going to allow the illegal play, I simply wait until the dice are up, make no comment and play on. There is no need to mention what the illegal play was if you are going to accept it.

Of course, this discussion is moot if we are using a clock.
