In Response To: Chicago ABT Finals..a couple suggestions (Gregg Cattanach)

As much as I hated playing this format, I am one of the proponents of spreading the money thinner. I think too few people walk away from a tournament with money and too much of the money goes to the top. I think the amount of hedging that goes on in the money rounds attests to this, as players often adjust the payout to more people in this manner.

I think the winner of a tournament would hardly notice if he got 20 percent less, as would the 2nd place winner, and if that money would give 4 other people their entry fee back so that they at least broke even, I think more people would walk away having enjoyed the experience more (and would be more likely to come back).

Because there is no handicap in tournament backgammon, most of the players who are at the bottom end of the skill level in the Open or Intermediate divisions feel like they have pretty poor odds of cashing compared to the players at the higher end, and the more people we can spread some of the money to the better those people will feel about coming to more tournaments, so in the long run, with more entrants, the winners will actually get more money.

I know people who have stopped traveling to tournaments and don't even enter major events in their local tournaments strictly because they are tired of giving their money away--after entering many tournaments and walking away with nothing. If they could just get their entry fee back once in a while by making it to the semis I believe that would be great encouragement to keep coming.

The math is simple--if you reduce the top winner's prize money by 20 percent but get even 10 percent more entrants as a result, the top players still make more money and more people are made happy. I firmly believe this will happen (and by the way, you will also see less hedging because it won't be necessary).
