I'm not making any such assumption. Would you be in favor of rewriting the rules so that an illegal move can be pointed out even after the opponent has rolled the dice? It may still be the case that there is no dispute as to what the previous roll is.

Making a rule that picking up the dice condones an illegal move does not amount to stating that picking up the dice creates a dispute. It just rules that picking up the dice condones an illegal move. If one is going to make a rule, then I'm just saying it seems consistent with the spirit of other rules involving a single set of dice that destroying the physical evidence ought to end one's timeframe for correcting an illegal move.
