Is it just my opinion or does there seem to be fewer major upsets in soccer than in most of the other major team sports?

I assume you mean at the national level? At the club level plenty of upsets do happen for example this past season of the EPL Man U. lost to Burnley (who ended up being relegated) and Chelsea lost to Wigan Athletic. Those were major upsets.

As far as at the national level, there is far less parity (compare Brazil to Faroe Islands) than you see within American professional sports which makes major upsets (Faroe Islands beating Brazil) far more unlikely. But what about average teams beating top teams (like US vs. England)? That's trickier and I don't have a good feel for how to compare that to other national team sports (or even professional club sports).
