You should also consider when your opponent will double. If your opponent doubles when he has any market losing sequences (and no rolls that will cause him to have to drop your cube), your losses will be on 2. Against such a strategy, you can not do better than mimicking his strategy, ensuring that all your wins will be on two. This pair of strategies will form a Nash equilibrium, neither player can do better given the strategy of the other.
You can gain by waiting if your opponent follows a different strategy. For example, if your opponent for some reason never doubles, then you'd want to double closer to your take point. However - where to find such an opponent? And how do you know you are playing one? And is it rational for such an opponent to have this strategy?
