In that situation the critical question is can the referee see (or perhaps even infer) the position of the player's arms and hands, which he might even if he can't see the player's "front."

Casper asked about other large field games. In international rugby, wikipedia tells me, there are 5 officials -- one referee, two assistants, one timekeeper (in whose absence the referee keeps time, as in soccer) and a video replay official. With regard to the last, like Major League Baseball, associated football has to date not chosen to incorporate instant replay into the officiating.
