Trice's rule is for "roll" positions. For "pips" positions the 10% + 2 pips rule seems much better, but breaks down for short races. What to do ?

Subtract 5 from leader's pip count, divide by 7, round down. The result is the maximum pip difference allowing a take. That's Trice's suggestion for short pips races. I think it's derived from the one-checker-model.
