Bot wish list

I'm posting this in response to Stick's choice in the opening here:

Stick got a chance to try an unusual move choice since GNU is a donkey. And that was good practice. The problem is that it doesn't happen often enough. When playing humans, we face a large variety of openings. I would like to get more practice against a larger variety of openings when playing bots. As things are, if the bot thinks that 51S is better than 51$, we will NEVER see the latter and we will never get any practice with the responses.

There is a very strong freeware Othello program which randomizes openings.

I don't know exactly how it works, but in general, you can have the bot randomly choose between moves within a certain tolerance of the best move. The size of the error allowed is a game parameter that can be changed. This is great for opening practice. It also has this feature in the middle game although it is less valuable there. I would love to see this option built into Backgammon software to allow practicing the opening against a wider variety of reasonable choices.
