Two positions from Jake Jacobs

I had a question about the two positions below, which are reproduced from an article by Jake Jacobs in the Flint Area Backgammon News, Feb/Mar 2010. (I sent my question to what I thought was Jake's email address but I did not receive a reply.) Before asking my question, though, I'll give you a chance to ponder what you would play in each position.
