"They have limited access to the game for foreigners . . ."

That's a brief extract from Larry's doomed attempt to get the implications and sequelae of robotic clock controls to be evaluated realistically.

"They have limited . . ." is probably too much the active voice, but here is some data from Wednesday on a game that is having a much different degree of international merging.

The round of 8 in the Spingold, the main event of the Bridge Summer Nationals, was played in New Orleans on Wednesday. There were 46 participants on the 8 teams. 26 of them were foreigners. Including 5 Bulgarians and 2 Egyptians. The primary event at the Spring Nationals in Reno was won by 6 Frenchmen. This has been a multi-year trend - the major US tournaments very well attended by foreign players, including Russians and Poles, as well as the usual suspects.

Backgammon is stunningly parochial. Major foreign players don't come to US events, as far as I can tell. A handful of US players showed up at the self-denominated World Championship earlier this month.

Poker, of course, has a large trans-national participation.

Is backgammon shriveling, or merely in stasis?
