Streaming Live Backgammon - Possible eXtreme Gammon/Gnubg Modification?

Part of the challenge of streaming live backgammon is the large amount of bandwidth that broadcasting a screen takes (or, even worse, a live camera). It seems to me that the amount of data required to pubish a backgammon game in real time is actually very small - Kb rather the Mb currently required.
The idea is that instead of broadcasting a live screenshot you would broadcast a live match transcription. This would be produced by the recording software (xG for example). The viewer would then recode the transcription back into a board and dice using either software on the viewer's computer or a dedicated website.
Live cameras, audio etc. could then be focussed on the players and commentators rather than the board. Matches could be broadcast using a mobile internet connection where a suitable alternative was not available. Matches could be viewed on a mobile internet connection. And, perhaps most importantly, the viewing experience for all viewers would be considerably improved.
I can't imagine that this would be a big software challenge.
Any thoughts?
