Scenario

For the sake of this scenario let's assume the player in question is I. I will give details, probably even some superfluous details, but if you need clarification on anything ask and I'll do my best to reply.

There is a weekly local backgammon tournament held and at this tournament there are two tournaments. The first, which is usually filled weeks in advance for a small entry fee, say $20, and then the second which starts roughly an hour after the first for $10. (both also have side pools of $10)

The first tournament is single elimination. The second tournament has a consolation bracket.

All this time there are also chouettes happening up to $25 per point.

  1. What are my unwritten obligations, if any, as a backgammon player and for the good of backgammon in general to participate in the first tournament (if possible, often filled way ahead of time) or the second tournament?
