Phil Simborg's 5-5 revisited

Recently I argued that there was more than meets the eye in Phil's 5-5 play of the day. To back up this assertion, I rolled out a variant in which I have shifted one spare from the 8 point to the 6 point. (I also changed the score to DMP, which I think is a better reference score, and I don't think the checker play differs much from 5a1a Crawford.) The results differ rather dramatically from Phil's rollout of the original position. Any explanations?

The score (after 0 games) is: gnubg 0, tchow 0 (match to 1 point, post-Crawford play)
