PGA Golf -- OT

Perhaps you saw where Jim Furyk was disqualified last week from playing in the Barclay's tournament -- which is the first step in the PGA's playoff system -- for oversleeping and missing his Pro-Am tee time on Wednesday by five minutes. He was automatically dq'd in accordance with the rules and took full responsibility for his mistake.

Now the PGA Commissioner, Tim Finchem, has decided that henceforth, including the remainder of this year's playoff, a player will not be dq'd in such a circumstance.

I think it grossly unfair to change the rule in the middle of the playoffs. The old rule is stupid and the new rule much better; however, Furyk will have been treated differently in a competitive situation where points are accumulated over a series of events. What if a golfer oversleeps the pro-am this week, then plays in the tourney and wins, plus wins the FedEx Cup? That's an opportunity Furyk never had. Change it for next season, don't change it now.

This would be analagous to a backgammon tourney director enforcing a written rule in a match that costs a guy the match and a chance at the tourney, but then deciding it is a stupid rule that he won't enforce against anyone else for the remainder of the tourney. Say what?
