A Football Question For Chuck (And Others)

It's that season again, and all too often we're going to hear sportscasters proclaim that “time of possession” is important in winning games. Football teams tend to buy into this accepted wisdom and emphasize the running game, which eats up time on the clock, especially if the other team has a hot quarterback ("Keep the ball out of his hands").

The problem I have with this thinking is that each team gets the ball the same number of times in a game (think about it), and what is important is moving the football down the field - however that is accomplished - and scoring. A team that is more successful in moving the football more often than not dominates in time of possession. So time of possession doesn't in itself contribute to a win, but is merely the result of moving the ball and scoring.

Am I missing something here?
