Origin of the term "bot"

Of course, "bot" comes from "robot," but how did this term become the standard word for a backgammon program? For example, in chess, it's more common to refer to the programs as the "engines."

It's not always possible to trace the origins of things like this, but I'm wondering if anyone remembers when it first came into common usage.
