Smoothing in Bearoffs

I find myself continually amused by observing players smoothing during the bear-off -- and, of course, there may be the rare situations, primarily in late game positions, where it may be correct. But I'm speaking generally of early, non-contact, competitive bear-off situations.
My recently departed dear friend Tom Wright said one of the most lasting and impactful lessons I ever gave him was in this arena. I said something to the effect of: "Why protect against the potential future bad roll by taking a bad roll now by your play?"
How does one know he/she is not about to roll a series of large doubles? -- and by not taking off as many as possible prior to the doubles sequence cost oneself the game/match?
Accept the bad rolls when they come. Don't manufacture them, you may still yet get another.
