Two Ideas to Encourage Clock Play (and related thoughts)

Many players who should have no problem with clocks are understandably apprehensive about them. For one thing, it's natural to resist change. But some players aren't sure whether they will be able to handle the allowances. I suggest:

1) In those tournaments, or rounds of tournaments where clock play is optional, give more generous allowances! 12 seconds per move and 2 minutes per point is quite common so, break new clock players in by allowing 15 sec per move, or 2.5 or 3 minutes per point - or even both. Get players used to clocks, and at the same time most will realise that they can easily handle these allowances.

2) Allow players a 'dry run', using a clock in a match without the possibility of actually losing on time! Again, obviously has to be in a 'clock option' round/event. If they run out of time the match continues without the clock. Doesn't preclude a director from imposing a clock if the match is lagging behind. If so, the clocks are zeroed, then reset for real: at least the new player(s) will have had some practice!

It has been suggested in these forums that there are no negative aspects to clock use. One however, is often overlooked: it can encourage players to skimp on shaking and even rolling their dice. Also, of course, with respect to cocked dice, it is unfair that the players roll into different sides of the board. Both of these are remidied by the use of a baffle box.

Some may feel that a clock and a baffle box is too much; that it takes up too much space and/or is too different to what they are used to. Get real! This is competitive backgammon; you can't take as long as you want over a play, and your rolls are supposed to be truly random. There's often big money/prestige at stake. You either believe in the principle of transparency or you don't. If you do, don't oppose the baffle box!
