football rule - Manning's fumble

I don't get it. And since this is the only blog that I visit, I will ask here because some of you know the answer. Of course, I could visit a football blog. But, non-backgammon issues sometimes adds a bit of spice to BGO.

I thought that the ground could not create a fumble. But Manning who had control of the ball towards the end of the game fell to the ground and the ball popped up. Yet, this was a fumble.

Please explain.
