Freedman - "This apart from the phenomenon that the only folks who have no patience with sensitivities on racial epithets seem invariably to belong to groups that have no (recent) history of persecution/oppression."
This may be frequently true but not always true. Previously, I wrote a blog that you described as the worst of all times at BG Online. Perhaps, you should reread that post and notice that many important, yet unpleasant facts were openly discussed. Of course, not all are expected to agree with the opinions which accompanied the facts. The patience of Americans to tolerate whines of racism or bigotry is running thin. Even some minorities are recognizing that overly political correct speech clouds serious problems which are not discussed due to exaggerated concern of racial sensitivity.
Your post may only mention racial epithets. Yes, caution in this area is warranted. But, American dialog is overly restricted due to concerns of racism. Some recognize this. You have seen the example of some BGOnline members who are rebelling against this censorship. They refuse to accept that words are necessarily bigoted when no ill intent was present. You are seeing a bit of revolt from political correctness.
Example, many years ago a Japanese diplomat stated that the U. S. education system was not as bad as its statistics because it was burdened by the performance of Black Americans. This diplomat was force to apologize for such a horrible "racist" statement. However, nobody discussed the basis of that diplomat’s statement. According to the Department of Education, about 55% of Asian public school students are proficient, 46% of White students are proficient, and 13% of Black students are proficient. I submit that we do not deal with grotesque Black American problems due to a fear of being insensitive, bigoted, or racist.
Avoiding racial epithets is fine. But Joe, I really wish you could see the damage of politically correct speech.
Stanley
