A Few Responses on Offensive Language, Stick and Stones, and Political Correctness

Stanley, I agree that political correctness and hypersensitivity carries its own hazards. Ignoring reality is not usually a recipe for success. If performance by Af. Am. students is bringing down the average U.S. student performance (a reasonable supposition), that needs to be addressed, not denied. Of course, there are other factors that are responsible for poor performance, and singling out one race, especially by a foreigner, is not helpful. But more importantly, and the reason I described your earlier post intemperately (for which I apologize) is the rush to generalize. Even if AfAm students as a group underperform, that doesn't mean they lack intelligence, and it certainly doesn't mean that a particular person in that group lacks intelligence, even assuming that the group as a whole is less intelligent than other groups. (Just to be clear, I do not assume or believe that.) And yes, some undeserving folks may be rewarded (Clarence Thomas comes to mind), but that doesn't mean that all AAs advanced through aff'tive action, or that all who did are not otherwise deserving. Your description of the President was particularly without foundation.
