"Black" is still perfectly acceptable and is much more common in spoken English. Changing terminology can create difficulties, as when my college newspaper referred to Nelson Mandela as an "African-American."
"Negro" is not considered offensive, but simply antiquated. "Colored" is antiquated to the point where it is probably mildly offensive (although there is a movie out called "For Colored Girls," which no one would dream of renaming from the 1975 original version). Both are words that you would only expect to hear from your grandfather.
