What is Happening to Backgammon?

I noticed Bill Davis has an editorial "What is Happening to Backgammon?"

He writes "backgammon is morphing into chess" and I assume that is bad.

I am not a Chicago Point subscriber. Can someone summarize Bill's argument and main points here?

One thing I worry about is official backgammon ratings. I have long thought ratings are a mistake, as it provides more reasons to quit than join the game.

Example - after your skill peaks, you don't want to play and have your rating go down. Or, if you take an extended break you are reluctant to come back, because at this point you are overrated and playing will send you down.

Also, I imagine ratings are like the bots - revealing exactly how good or bad people really are.
