Overdue for Double Fives

There are eight positions posted below.

In my 59th of a 60-game session, I was acutely aware of the fact that I had not had my rightful share of doubles fives on that day. I was therefore not at all surprised when I rolled 55 after doubling in Position 1. What is the correct cube action here before rolling 55? I am very glad I was not overdue to roll 44. If I had been overdue to roll 44 instead of 55, I would not have doubled. What is the best way to play 44 and what is the cube action after 44?

In the last game of the session, I was still overdue for more double fives, so again I was almost expecting to roll 55 in Position 4. I spotted the hit without any help from my opponent, but I will never know if I would have found the cover on my own, because my opponent could not himself, telling me I had covered before I figured it out for myself.
