If in the strictest sense you mean 'backgammon pro' as one who plays bg as his only way of earning a living then that would be a rare breed indeed. If you loosened your collar a bit and allowed it to mean earning a living off of backgammon, there would be a few more fish able to fill that pond. They could do this by writing articles, books, giving lessons, etc...

I also believe I know a US player or two that does adhere to the strict sense of the term but I'm not going to point them out as they may not welcome the recognition.

I agree that because someone won some obnoxious sum of money that does not make them a bg pro any more than the donkey who wins the WSOP every year being called a poker pro. He is a lucky donkey who doesn't have to work any more, that is all.
