When is the 6/5 split correct?

The following board is from a GG match played last night by 2 magnificent players. Blue misses the correct play and it is one that I am trying my best to understand when it comes up. Can you please tell me what is required in terms of position, comparative board strength, comparative pip count, score, gammon risk, etc. that allow will me (and others) to clearly see when the correct play should be made?
