Nicely explained, Nack. I've gotten to the point where I instinctively want to split when the opponent has an advanced anchor like this, and devalue the bar point, for basically the reasons you outlined. The slotting part, however, I don't have internalized yet. I'm tempted to say that slotting in front of an advanced anchor is something that we can afford to do more freely, rather than a strong tactic. A "strong tactic" sounds like it's achieving an important goal, and here it seems to me that while splitting achieves an important goal, the slotting part of the play is something we do because the other aces are weak.

I guess one way to address this question is to ask whether Blue would prefer to play 6/5 or to (illegally) refuse to play any ace at all. Any insight on this question?
