Happy Birthday to Kenji Shimodaira!

Kenji is a very famous and very strong backgammon player from Tokyo, Japan. He was formerly the president of the Japanese Backgammon Association, but he resigned because he wanted to play in the tournaments instead of direct.

Kenji's backgammon game continues to improve. His XG PR is a full point lower now than it was a year ago. At this rate, in a couple of years, he will be the best player in the universe.

Kenji has a long list of big-time tournament successes. He won the doubles in Monte Carlo in 2008. Last year, in 2010, he reached the finals of four major events: the first consolation in Monte Carlo, the Japan Open, the Japan Masters and the Japanese Board Saint. Kenji also won the European doubles in November in France. Not enough space here to mention all of Kenji's big tournament wins.

Over the last year, Kenji has compiled a 13-1 record against World #1 Giant Mochy in long tournament matches. Kenji has won dozens and dozens of matches online against Falafel. Last year Kenji won six money 9pt matches in a row from me. If Mochy, Falafel or I have to quit playing backgammon, it will be because of losing too much money to Kenji.

Although his primary occupation is making money playing backgammon, his secondary occupation is working as an orthodontist, mostly in Tokyo, but a few days month in Okinawa.

More important than his success in backgammon is the fact that Kenji is the nicest guy you will ever meet. Always in a fun mood, Kenji loves to show visitors around Tokyo, treating them to fantastic sushi. Kenji loves to eat great food, and it seems he always knows the chef at all the fine restaurants.

I encourage everyone to attend the annual tournament in Tokyo in the early fall. They quit play every evening at 9 PM and everyone goes out to a fantastic restaurant for great food and a great time together.

Although it is Thursday in the USA, it is Friday in Japan. Although Kenji is turning 49 years old today (Friday in Japan), it is his 50th birthday. Kenji was zero when he was born on his first birthday. A year later, he turned one year old on his second birthday. When he was two years old, he had his third birthday. Now that he is turning 49, it is his 50th birthday.

Happy 50th birthday to Kenji, and many, many more!
