skills & talents for chess & backgammon

anybody else tried both chess & backgammon ?

i've read about several top end chess players doing well in both chess & backgammon, also poker, so there must be some skills/talent overlap between these different games

as for me i tried chess and did not get very far. understanding the concepts was fairly easy but visualizing & coordinating the piece moves was much too difficult for me. in particular i could do the mate-1 puzzles from polgars excellent 5337 puzzle book very quickly & accurately about 50/hour at 98%+ correct, but the mate-2 puzzles completely stumped me. that book has tons of difficult mate-2 puzzles i could look at and try various things for 10 minutes and still not "see" the correct answer, then looking in the back it's so "obvious" etc so there were clear gaps in my analysis skills. yes i kept trying & studying doing notes trying to focus but it just wasn't happening for me

fortunately i seem to have more talent for backgammon (woo hoo) where it just seems easier to learn & progress. so far i've read a few books & articles and can now more consistently win against gnubg expert +1 ply, so i will continue this effort :)

chess seems to be more demanding of brain skills with all the move lookaheads & various playing styles
