The Cincinnati Kid final hand

Last night we had a Steve McQueen triple feature. And like the man, we were all tired at the final hand. Someone then said, that it is nearly impossible that a hand is played like this heads up show down. I don't know much about poker. But they played with open stakes, and when the man called the reasonable bet of 3000 he might have think: i have nine diamonds and three 9's draw against one 10 and two aces draw. With all on the table and 5000 $ in the hole, i am getting odds for money favorite. Kid checkraised in the end, misreading the 1000 $ bet as representing a flush/bluff. He was beaten by his own pride. I find all actions plausible and going all in from the kid, can it be a fault?
