A little rules question...and socialiability in a local BG club

This situation came up the other night in a match during the bearoff of the crawford game.

Player A is a regular local player that has never played in ABT events, Player B plays in one or two ABT events a year in the open.

Player A asks if he can roll on the left side of the board since Player A has to roll into his home board with all the checkers in the way. Player B says no.

At the beginning of the next game (DMP) Player A asks if the direction can be changed so that player B would have to roll into the bearoff home boards. Player B says no because once the direction is set at the beginning of the match it should not be changed. Player B offers to call the director. Player A is disgruntled but does not want to call the director. The game is played with the same direction.

In the last few days both players independently pulse the director on how he would rule. The director agrees with Player B.

My question is for a local BG club in a tournament match.......What is more disrespectful and discourteous....insisting on following the little rules or asking for relief from the ones you dont like?
