BQ: Screwing up the very first move

Following the adage the backgammon is primarily a race, I hit the slotted checker on the bar point since it would definitely slow the other guy; this I thought more important than making the 5 point.
I figured that this early in the game the 5 point would not be that important. Plus, noticing that not hitting would give the opponent the chance to do one of two good things on the next turn--either make my bar point or run the checker to safety--I figured hitting was the way to go.
