BQ: Forsaking your opponent's golden point

I seem to recall an aphorism that goes something like this: "You almost never go wrong making the defensive 5-point."
So, when an inexperienced player is clueless about a position and has the opportunity to make the opponent's five point, then what do you think we do?
The problem is that the golden point may be fool's gold. Here is one such position, according to the bot.
I figured that the safety gains of making the 5 point (especially given that I had a third man in his inner board) made up for the double shot left on my outer board.
Perversely, I noted that his hitting either of those blots would require his relinquishing my 5 point, so there, not only did I make the 5 point, but if he hit me, he would have to relinquish his!
Will appreciate an explanation of why this was such a bad play.
Thanks.
