See this post. The basic idea is to first master your 13 times tables, and then try to group your pip count into multiples of 13, give or take a few pips. Checkers on your midpoint are 13 pips exactly, a pair of checkers that is symmetrically distributed about your own bar point adds up to 13 pips, and checkers in your opponent's board are 26 pips minus a few. It's a nice trick I think.
