I recently learned from the excellent book Final Jeopardy by Stephen Baker that Gerald Tesauro, known to BGO readers for his pioneering work on TD-Gammon, was heavily involved in training IBM's 'Watson' computer the proper betting strategy for Jeopardy! Before Tesauro got involved, Watson's betting strategies were simple and rather conservative. It should be no surprise to backgammon players that Tesauro proceeded to evaluate different strategies by "rolling them out," and concluded that Watson would do much better by adopting a much more aggressive doubling strategy.
More information about Watson's strategies may be found in this article by Tesauro.
