Chiva's Tournament in Cyprus, Who is Tobias Hellweg?

Chiva did a great job of running the tournament in Cyprus. Clocks were used for most matches and the tournament progressed at a reasonable, relaxed pace.

Cyprus is a beautiful island with perfect weather, beaches and mountains, just 40 miles south of Turkey and not far from Lebanon. It was settled some 12,000 years ago, so there are many interesting historical buildings and sites.

The tournament is held in the beautiful Golden Tulip Casino. They provided two incredibly delicious buffet meals per day. A room for two costs 110 euros per night.

There were 54 players in the Masters (called Championship in the USA) and 10 buy backs made a full draw of 64. Altogether, there were roughly 100 participants from 20 countries, including Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, Lebanon, Israel, USA, Germany, Norway, Georgia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Japan and many others. There were more players from Turkey than from any other country, and they were all friendly and polite.

Tobias Hellweg beat Michy of Japan at DMP in the 17pt finals. Stepan Nuniyents won the last chance.

Who is Toby Hellweg?

Toby is 36 years old, born in Munich, Germany. Where does he live now? No one knows for sure, but over the last few years, he has spent some months in each of the following locations: Chicago, London, Zurich, Vienna, Hamburg, Tokyo and Thailand.

Toby has been playing backgammon since he turned 19. He is in excellent outstanding condition; he ran a marathon (26+ miles, 42+ km) last year in under four hours.

Toby has had quite a bit of success at tournaments in Europe and Africa. He won the consolation in Monte Carlo in 2010.

Congratulations to Toby for winning the tournament, to Michy for being the runner up and to Chiva for doing such a great job!
