On Snooker - "The Miss Rule"

If the player snookered, makes a genuine effort to get out of the snooker and misses by a fraction the referee has no choice but to declare a miss Snookers governing body were surprised to find that all the professionals agreed with keeping the idiotic rule because there is no realistic alternative that solves the problem.
On the flipside, I was watching one match where the referee declared a "free ball" The player disagreed with the ref's decision, So the other player took a look and agreed with the other - thus over-ruling the referee's decision. The audience acknowledged the sportsmanship.
In the first case, regardless of how idiotic the rule is - the rule stands
In the second case, if the other player had said nothing the referee's decision would have stood.
Here's a really interesting one! Player (A) goes for a pot and misses but the ball in question is hanging on the edge of the pocket. Player (B) gets down to take his shot and the ball drops into the pocket before he takes his shot. The rule is when this happens the ball is placed back on the table in its original position.
Make of it what you will!
