For the first time in the history of backgammon, federations and organizations from 15 countries will pull together as partners to sponsor a tournament. The U.S. Backgammon Federation is co-sponsoring the 1st International Backgammon Championship with the Danish Backgammon Foundation and the Japanese Backgammon League. It will give players across the globe the chance to compete in a worldwide competition at a very low cost.

The stakes are high! Not only is it a matter of national pride, but based upon an estimated 40 players participating from 15 countries the prize pool will be $57,000 (paid in Euros), to 4 places. The prize breakdown would be 50% for first, 25% for second and 12.5% for third and fourth place. To win it you have to be in it! Come join the fun!

There are lots of ways to compete to become one of four U.S. representatives. The USBGF is sponsoring numerous qualifying events between now and September 5. They include:

A. ABT Open Tournaments winner(s) in a $20 side pool for this purpose.

B. Giants Invitational Tournament in Chicago winner(s) in a side pool for this purpose.

C. USBGF National Championships winner(s), in a side pool for this purpose, held in LA in June.

D. USBGF World Giants’ Challenge Quiz winners(s), in a side pool for this purpose, held in LA in June.

E. USBGF National Club Tournament Winning Team member (one of the team)

F. Local Club Tournaments or Buy-in. Local Clubs need to raise $80 to place one player in a finals playoff (1 round) to determine who gets the U.S. Playoff seats.

G. Players may enter the U.S. Playoffs directly by contributing $160.

H. ABT winner in 2010

I. ABT point leader through Sept.5, 2011.

J. Such other events as the organizers my designate.

Entrants to qualifying events and the U.S. IBC Playoffs must be USBGF Premium members, or in the case of Local Club Tournaments, the winning players need to join the USBGF. If a player qualifies in more than one US IBC Qualifying Event, he/she will be given a bye in the US IBC Playoffs. The field for the U.S. Playoff is expected to consist of 64 players. Players who have qualified for the U.S. IBC Playoffs may be found at usbgf.org/usbgf-events/1st-international-bg-championship/ Play will be on-line between September 5 and October 10 with matches prior to the round of 16 to be recorded and submitted for review. The round of 16 and lower will be proctored as well as recorded.

The international competition will begin October 12 and complete the opening rounds by the end of December 2011 by proctored online competition. The USBGF will pay the entry fees of the four US representatives of 1000 Euros and 50 Euro registration fee for each player to participate in the semi-finals and finals in the first quarter of 2012 in a location to be determined.

The Tournament Director for the U.S. Qualifying Playoffs is Stick, email: IBC@usbgf.org or see usbgf.org for more information.
