Why isn't backgammon played for table stakes?

I did not have a name for it, but when I play with the kids, we use chips instead of keeping match or money scores on paper. I think the visual and concrete feedback enhances the kids' experience; they feel like they are playing for something.

This post-- http://www.bgonline.org/forums/webbbs_config.pl?noframes;read=56912 --about Tom's iPhone application taught me a new term, "table stakes".

This got me thinking: BG is played as money games, which can be financially risky when the cube runs up. BG is played as matches, which have their own complexity and are useful in the tournament setting.

Why isn't backgammon played for table stakes?
