Laptop problem

Using computer the other day when keyboard/mouse suddenly died. Windows comes up with a popup "installing device drivers"...and then "device driver install failed". So I reboot, keyboard/mouse are gone. Tried booting into windows safe mode, ubuntu, ubuntu recovery mode, keyboard/mouse still gone. Keyboard is fully working in the BIOS. It also works in GRUB.

Tried booting from a ubuntu cd, still no response from keyboard/mouse. Tried attaching USB mouse and nothing (don't have USB keyboard). The light comes on only when in the BIOS. Tries running memtest86+ and it got about halfway through and then crashed I think (possibly due to overheating). The BIOS quick memory test says the RAM is OK.

I ruled out physical problem because it is working in the BIOS and in grub. Startup is fine, just no response from keyboard/mouse. My first thought is that it is some kind of mobo/BIOS issue, but I can't do much debugging because the laptop is Japanese. Calling up tech support would be challenging.

Any suggestions?
